So I'm a mechanical engineer working for one of the largest oil services company in the world. Graduated with a BS in 2000 from University of Texas at Austin. I was like most people that believed you could get by with just a stable high paying salary and taking care of your retirement and kids tuition.
If you include:
1) kids activities
2) kids college
3) general expenses like food, entertainment, mortage...
4) retirement fund - Roth IRA, 401k, Educational funds, Traditional IRA...
5) 2 automobiles
6) and TAXES
7) oh almost forgot, paying for 2 kids weddings. Most will go for more than mine which ran over $30k
8) oops, almost forgot as I take it off the top but I give God what is his First. I give him his then I work with the rest.
There really isn't much left from a salaried position. So if I work harder I don't get more than a 3% raise so what can I do? Get another job which takes more time from my family or just build a business.
Building a Business it is.
